Looking to strengthen and extend your reo Māori skills? This 38-week intermediate programme builds on the foundations of Levels 1 and 2, helping learners develop greater accuracy, confidence, and cultural understanding. You’ll refine your sentence structures, expand your vocabulary, and learn to use te reo Māori more effectively in both everyday situations and familiar cultural settings.
If you successfully finish this Te Reo Torohū programme, you’ll gain these qualifications:
- Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua), Kaupae 3 – New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua), Level 3
- Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua), Kaupae 4 – New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua), Level 4
Te Reo Torohū L3 & 4 is a 120-credit one-year full-time programme. Students who successfully complete Te Reo Torohū L3 & 4 may staircase into Te Reo Ihirangi L5, our DipTRMāori L5 full-time, immersion programme.
Classes are based onsite at our Henderson campus, within a reo rua, billingual environment. Students will expand their understanding of key aspects of te reo Māori, including Rerehāngū (passive sentences), Rereāhua (comparative sentences), how to ask and respond to questions and express opinions in te reo Māori. This programme supports the accurate, fluent, and meaningful use of te reo Māori in everyday situations, professional settings, and kaupapa Māori environments.

- Communicate confidently at an intermediate level using accurate reo Māori structures.
- Talk about connections to land, people, and local histories.
- Use te reo Māori appropriately across selected everyday and cultural contexts.
- Complete tasks and guide others using intermediate reo Māori.
- Use a range of structures, including comparisons, possession, and negations.
- Participate in conversations, give instructions, and discuss actions, people, time, and place.
- Demonstrate understanding of tikanga Māori in familiar settings.
- Apply appropriate kīwaha, whakataukī, and reo ā-iwi.

To enrol in this programme, students are required to attend: Tuesday class, 6:00pm – 9:00pm 8 wānanga reo (Fridays, from 5pm – 10pm, and on Saturdays from 8am to 10pm) 1x 3hour tutorial per week (Time and Date to be confirmed by the kaiako)

To enrol in this programme, students are required to:
- be at least 16 years of age
- be a New Zealand citizen (or a citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, or the Cook Islands) or a permanent resident
- reside in New Zealand
- have completed previous te reo Māori study and are ready to take their learning to the next level.
- speak with a teacher to discuss course workload and the applicant’s availability to commit to the programme.

Te Wānanga Ihorangi is working in partnership with Te Wānanga Amorangi (Laidlaw College) to deliver these programmes. All of our Diplomas in Te Reo Māori are held and administered through Te Wānanga Amorangi, and our students will be formally enrolled at both institutions.
Students will experience a distinctive Māori-led kaupapa in Te Wānanga Ihorangi’s immersive learning community and campus. However, one of the great benefits of the partnership is that our students will also have access to the support and systems of Te Wānanga Amorangi as well. Te Wānanga Amorangi is Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest Christian tertiary college, it is a Category 1 Private Training Establishment, and teaches programmes from Certificate to Doctoral level.
